PABA Celebrates Judge Rob Villeza’s Investiture

Los Angeles, CA – The Philippine American Bar Association (PABA) congratulates Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rob Villeza on his December 11, 2014 investiture. California Governor Jerry Brown appointed Judge Villeza to the Superior Court on November 12, 2014. Last Thursday, U.S. District Judge Consuelo Marshall administered the oath to Judge Villeza, formally installing him on the largest unified trial court in the United States.

Judge Villeza’s investiture ceremony took place in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in downtown Los Angeles. The event was well-attended, with guests filling Judge Marshall’s courtroom and a second overflow room. Several community leaders spoke at the event, including Judge Marshall, Central District U.S. Attorney Stephanie Yonekura, California Court of Appeal Justice Jeffrey Johnson, Orange County Superior Court Judge Fred Slaughter, and PABA President Hildy Aguinaldo.

Judge Villeza’s path to the Superior Court bench exemplifies the American Dream. Raised by Filipino-American parents in Echo Park, he was the first in his family to complete graduate school and to become a lawyer. Judge Villeza is a proud graduate of Southern California public schools, including UCLA Law School. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Villeza served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Central District of California. His most recent position was Deputy Chief of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Section.

PABA President Aguinaldo stated, “As a judge, Rob will be one of eight Filipino-American judges on the Los Angeles Superior Court. His achievement is especially important for our community given how few Filipino Americans serve in high-level public service legal positions. There is only one Filipino American at the appellate level in California, Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye. There is only one Filipino American federal trial judge, District Judge Lorna Schofield in the Southern District of New York. There is only one Filipino American in the California Legislature, Assemblymember Rob Bonta. We are extremely pleased by Judge Villeza’s appointment and know he will use the perspective of who he is and where he came from to continue to effectuate justice, now from the bench.”

Judge Marshall, who mentored Judge Villeza when he was her legal intern in 1986, presided over Thursday’s installation ceremony. She stated, “I am extremely proud of Rob. More than two decades ago, I first met Rob when he was a law student. Over the past 20 years, we became good friends. And now with Rob’s appointment, we are both judges in Los Angeles, and I could not be more pleased.”

PABA commends Governor Brown for appointing Judge Villeza to the Los Angeles Superior Court.
